4 When, now, the Lord became aware that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John- 2 although, indeed, Jesus himself did no baptizing but his disciples did. . .

John 4:1-2 CEV
(1) Jesus knew that the Pharisees had heard that he was winning and baptizing more followers than John was. (2) But Jesus's disciples were really the ones doing the baptizing, and not Jesus himself.

John 4:1-2 ALT
(1) So when the Lord knew that the Pharisees heard that Jesus is making and baptizing more disciples than John, (2) (although Jesus Himself was not baptizing, _but_ His disciples),
