••• You should recognize and know "and use" God's Hebrew Name! It is יהוה and sounds like to English speakers... God Himself wrote with his own finger on stone tablets He then gave to Moses. (Exo 31:18) Using the Diving Name of our Creator is a uniting force in this divided world! •••

1 Kings 17:1-18:45 ESV . . .Now Elijah the Tishbite, of Tishbe in Gilead, said to Ahab, "As the LORD  (יהוה), the God of Israel, lives, before whom I stand, there shall be neither dew nor rain these years, except by my word." (2) And the word of the LORD  (יהוה) came to him: (3) "Depart from here and turn eastward and hide yourself by the brook Cherith, which is east of the Jordan. (4) You shall drink from the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there." (5) So he went and did according to the word of the LORD  (יהוה). He went and lived by the brook Cherith that is east of the Jordan. (6) And the ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening, and he drank from the brook. (7) And after a while the brook dried up, because there was no rain in the land. (8) Then the word of the LORD  (יהוה) came to him, (9) "Arise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and dwell there. Behold, I have commanded a widow there to feed you." (10) So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, a widow was there gathering sticks. And he called to her and said, "Bring me a little water in a vessel, that I may drink." (11) And as she was going to bring it, he called to her and said, "Bring me a morsel of bread in your hand." (12) And she said, "As the LORD  (יהוה) your God lives, I have nothing baked, only a handful of flour in a jar and a little oil in a jug. And now I am gathering a couple of sticks that I may go in and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it and die." (13) And Elijah said to her, "Do not fear; go and do as you have said. But first make me a little cake of it and bring it to me, and afterward make something for yourself and your son. (14) For thus says the LORD  (יהוה), the God of Israel, 'The jar of flour shall not be spent, and the jug of oil shall not be empty, until the day that the LORD  (יהוה) sends rain upon the earth.'" (15) And she went and did as Elijah said. And she and he and her household ate for many days. (16) The jar of flour was not spent, neither did the jug of oil become empty, according to the word of the LORD  (יהוה) that he spoke by Elijah. (17) After this the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, became ill. And his illness was so severe that there was no breath left in him. (18) And she said to Elijah, "What have you against me, O man of God? You have come to me to bring my sin to remembrance and to cause the death of my son!" (19) And he said to her, "Give me your son." And he took him from her arms and carried him up into the upper chamber where he lodged, and laid him on his own bed. (20) And he cried to the LORD  (יהוה), "O LORD  (יהוה) my God, have you brought calamity even upon the widow with whom I sojourn, by killing her son?" (21) Then he stretched himself upon the child three times and cried to the LORD  (יהוה), "O LORD  (יהוה) my God, let this child's life come into him again." (22) And the LORD  (יהוה) listened to the voice of Elijah. And the life of the child came into him again, and he revived. (23) And Elijah took the child and brought him down from the upper chamber into the house and delivered him to his mother. And Elijah said, "See, your son lives." (24) And the woman said to Elijah, "Now I know that you are a man of God, and that the word of the LORD  (יהוה) in your mouth is truth."
1 Kings 18:1-45 ESV After many days the word of the LORD  (יהוה) came to Elijah, in the third year, saying, "Go, show yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain upon the earth." (2) So Elijah went to show himself to Ahab. Now the famine was severe in Samaria. (3) And Ahab called Obadiah, who was over the household. (Now Obadiah feared the LORD  (יהוה) greatly, (4) and when Jezebel cut off the prophets of the LORD  (יהוה), Obadiah took a hundred prophets and hid them by fifties in a cave and fed them with bread and water.) (5) And Ahab said to Obadiah, "Go through the land to all the springs of water and to all the valleys. Perhaps we may find grass and save the horses and mules alive, and not lose some of the animals." (6) So they divided the land between them to pass through it. Ahab went in one direction by himself, and Obadiah went in another direction by himself. (7) And as Obadiah was on the way, behold, Elijah met him. And Obadiah recognized him and fell on his face and said, "Is it you, my lord Elijah?" (8) And he answered him, "It is I. Go, tell your lord, 'Behold, Elijah is here.'" (9) And he said, "How have I sinned, that you would give your servant into the hand of Ahab, to kill me? (10) As the LORD  (יהוה) your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom where my lord has not sent to seek you. And when they would say, 'He is not here,' he would take an oath of the kingdom or nation, that they had not found you. (11) And now you say, 'Go, tell your lord, "Behold, Elijah is here."' (12) And as soon as I have gone from you, the Spirit of the LORD  (יהוה) will carry you I know not where. And so, when I come and tell Ahab and he cannot find you, he will kill me, although I your servant have feared the LORD  (יהוה) from my youth. (13) Has it not been told my lord what I did when Jezebel killed the prophets of the LORD  (יהוה), how I hid a hundred men of the LORD  (יהוה)'s prophets by fifties in a cave and fed them with bread and water? (14) And now you say, 'Go, tell your lord, "Behold, Elijah is here"'; and he will kill me." (15) And Elijah said, "As the LORD  (יהוה) of hosts lives, before whom I stand, I will surely show myself to him today." (16) So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him. And Ahab went to meet Elijah. (17) When Ahab saw Elijah, Ahab said to him, "Is it you, you troubler of Israel?" (18) And he answered, "I have not troubled Israel, but you have, and your father's house, because you have abandoned the commandments of the LORD  (יהוה) and followed the Baals. (19) Now therefore send and gather all Israel to me at Mount Carmel, and the 450 prophets of Baal and the 400 prophets of Asherah, who eat at Jezebel's table." (20) So Ahab sent to all the people of Israel and gathered the prophets together at Mount Carmel. (21) And Elijah came near to all the people and said, "How long will you go limping between two different opinions? If the LORD  (יהוה) is God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him." And the people did not answer him a word. (22) Then Elijah said to the people, "I, even I only, am left a prophet of the LORD  (יהוה), but Baal's prophets are 450 men. (23) Let two bulls be given to us, and let them choose one bull for themselves and cut it in pieces and lay it on the wood, but put no fire to it. And I will prepare the other bull and lay it on the wood and put no fire to it. (24) And you call upon the name of your god, and I will call upon the name of the LORD  (יהוה), and the God who answers by fire, he is God." And all the people answered, "It is well spoken." (25) Then Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, "Choose for yourselves one bull and prepare it first, for you are many, and call upon the name of your god, but put no fire to it." (26) And they took the bull that was given them, and they prepared it and called upon the name of Baal from morning until noon, saying, "O Baal, answer us!" But there was no voice, and no one answered. And they limped around the altar that they had made. (27) And at noon Elijah mocked them, saying, "Cry aloud, for he is a god. Either he is musing, or he is relieving himself, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he is asleep and must be awakened." (28) And they cried aloud and cut themselves after their custom with swords and lances, until the blood gushed out upon them. (29) And as midday passed, they raved on until the time of the offering of the oblation, but there was no voice. No one answered; no one paid attention. (30) Then Elijah said to all the people, "Come near to me." And all the people came near to him. And he repaired the altar of the LORD  (יהוה) that had been thrown down. (31) Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the LORD  (יהוה) came, saying, "Israel shall be your name," (32) and with the stones he built an altar in the name of the LORD  (יהוה). And he made a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two seahs of seed. (33) And he put the wood in order and cut the bull in pieces and laid it on the wood. And he said, "Fill four jars with water and pour it on the burnt offering and on the wood." (34) And he said, "Do it a second time." And they did it a second time. And he said, "Do it a third time." And they did it a third time. (35) And the water ran around the altar and filled the trench also with water. (36) And at the time of the offering of the oblation, Elijah the prophet came near and said, "O LORD  (יהוה), God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that you are God in Israel, and that I am your servant, and that I have done all these things at your word. (37) Answer me, O LORD  (יהוה), answer me, that this people may know that you, O LORD  (יהוה), are God, and that you have turned their hearts back." (38) Then the fire of the LORD  (יהוה) fell and consumed the burnt offering and the wood and the stones and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench. (39) And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces and said, "The LORD  (יהוה), he is God; the LORD  (יהוה), he is God." (40) And Elijah said to them, "Seize the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape." And they seized them. And Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon and slaughtered them there. (41) And Elijah said to Ahab, "Go up, eat and drink, for there is a sound of the rushing of rain." (42) So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Mount Carmel. And he bowed himself down on the earth and put his face between his knees. (43) And he said to his servant, "Go up now, look toward the sea." And he went up and looked and said, "There is nothing." And he said, "Go again," seven times. (44) And at the seventh time he said, "Behold, a little cloud like a man's hand is rising from the sea." And he said, "Go up, say to Ahab, 'Prepare your chariot and go down, lest the rain stop you.'" (45) And in a little while the heavens grew black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode and went to Jezreel.
1 Kings 17:1-18:45 GW . . .Elijah, who was from Tishbe but had settled in Gilead, said to Ahab, "I solemnly swear, as the LORD  (יהוה) God of Israel whom I serve lives, there will be no dew or rain during the next few years unless I say so." (2) Then the LORD  (יהוה) spoke his word to Elijah: (3) "Leave here, turn east, and hide beside the Cherith River, which is east of the Jordan River. (4) You can drink from the stream, and I've commanded ravens to feed you there." (5) Elijah left and did what the word of the LORD  (יהוה) had told him. He went to live by the Cherith River, which is east of the Jordan River. (6) Ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning and in the evening. And he drank from the stream. (7) But after some time the stream dried up because no rain had fallen in the land. (8) Then the LORD  (יהוה) spoke his word to Elijah: (9) "Get up, go to Zarephath (which belongs to Sidon), and stay there. I've commanded a widow there to feed you." (10) He got up and went to Zarephath. As he came to the town's entrance, a widow was gathering wood. He called to her, "Please bring me a drink of water." (11) As she was going to get it, he called to her again, "Please bring me a piece of bread too." (12) She said, "I solemnly swear, as the LORD  (יהוה) your God lives, I didn't bake any bread. I have one handful of flour in a jar and a little oil in a jug. I'm gathering wood. I'm going to prepare something for myself and my son so that we can eat it and then die." (13) Then Elijah told her, "Don't be afraid. Go home, and do as you've said. But first make a small loaf and bring it to me. Then prepare something for yourself and your son. (14) This is what the LORD  (יהוה) God of Israel says: Until the LORD  (יהוה) sends rain on the land, the jar of flour will never be empty and the jug will always contain oil." (15) She did what Elijah had told her. So she, Elijah, and her family had food for a long time. (16) The jar of flour never became empty, and the jug always contained olive oil, as the LORD  (יהוה) had promised through Elijah. (17) Afterwards, the son of the woman who owned the house got sick. He got so sick that finally no life was left in him. (18) The woman asked Elijah, "What do you and I have in common, man of God? Did you come here to remind me of my sin and kill my son?" (19) He said to her, "Give me your son." Elijah took him from her arms, carried him to the upstairs room where he was staying, and laid him on his own bed. (20) Then he called to the LORD  (יהוה), "LORD  (יהוה) my God, have you brought misery on the widow I'm staying with by killing her son?" (21) Then Elijah stretched himself over the boy three times and called to the LORD  (יהוה), "LORD  (יהוה) my God, please make this child's life return to him." (22) The LORD  (יהוה) heard Elijah's request, and the child's life returned to him. He was alive again. (23) Elijah took the child, brought him down from the upstairs room of the house, and gave him to his mother. He said, "Look! Your son is alive." (24) The woman said to Elijah, "Now I'm convinced that you are a man of God and that the word of the LORD  (יהוה) from your mouth is true."
1 Kings 18:1-45 GW A while later in the third year of the drought, the LORD  (יהוה) spoke his word to Elijah: "Present yourself to Ahab. I will allow rain to fall on the ground." (2) So Elijah went to present himself to Ahab. The famine was particularly severe in Samaria. (3) Ahab sent for Obadiah, who was in charge of the palace. Obadiah was a devout worshiper of the LORD  (יהוה). (4) (When Jezebel was killing the LORD  (יהוה)'S prophets, Obadiah had hidden 100 prophets in caves. He put 50 prophets in each cave and kept them alive by providing bread and water for them.) (5) Ahab told Obadiah, "Let's go throughout the countryside to every spring and stream. If we can find grass, then we can keep the horses and mules alive and not lose any animals." (6) So they split up in order to cover the entire countryside. Ahab went one way by himself, and Obadiah went the other way by himself. (7) Obadiah was on the road when he met Elijah. Obadiah recognized him and immediately bowed down to the ground. "Is it you, my master Elijah?" he asked. (8) "Yes," Elijah answered him. "Tell your master that Elijah is here." (9) Obadiah asked, "What have I done wrong to make you hand me over to Ahab to be killed? (10) I solemnly swear, as the LORD  (יהוה) your God lives, my master has searched for you in every region and kingdom. When people would say, 'He isn't here,' my master made that kingdom or region take an oath that they hadn't found you. (11) "Now you say, 'Tell your master that Elijah is here.' (12) This is what will happen: When I leave you, the LORD  (יהוה)'S Spirit will take you away to some unknown place. I'll tell Ahab, but he won't be able to find you. Then he will kill me. "I have been faithful to the LORD  (יהוה) since I was a child. (13) Haven't you heard what I did when Jezebel killed the LORD  (יהוה)'S prophets? Haven't you heard how I hid 100 of the LORD  (יהוה)'S prophets in caves? I hid 50 prophets in each cave and provided bread and water for them. (14) Now you say that I should tell my master that Elijah is here. He will kill me." (15) Elijah said, "I solemnly swear, as the LORD  (יהוה) of Armies whom I serve lives, I will present myself to Ahab." (16) So Obadiah went to tell Ahab. Ahab went to meet Elijah. (17) When he saw Elijah, Ahab said, "Is that you, you troublemaker of Israel?" (18) Elijah answered, "I haven't troubled Israel. You and your father's family have done it by disobeying the LORD  (יהוה)'S commands and following the various Baal gods. (19) Order all Israel to gather around me on Mount Carmel. And bring the 450 prophets of Baal and 400 prophets of Asherah who eat at Jezebel's table." (20) Ahab sent word to all the Israelites and brought the prophets together on Mount Carmel. (21) Elijah stood up in front of all the people and asked them, "How long will you try to have it both ways? If the LORD  (יהוה) is God, follow him; if Baal is God, follow him." The people didn't say a word. (22) So Elijah told the people, "I'm the only surviving prophet of the LORD  (יהוה), but there are 450 prophets of Baal. (23) Give us two bulls. Let the prophets of Baal choose one for themselves, cut it into pieces, lay it on the wood, but not set it on fire. I'll do the same with the other bull. (24) "You call on the name of your gods, but I will call on the name of the LORD  (יהוה). The god who answers by fire is the real God." All the people answered, "That's fine." (25) Elijah told the prophets of Baal, "Choose one bull for yourselves. Prepare yours first, because there are more of you. Call on the name of your god, but don't set the wood on fire." (26) They took the bull he gave them, prepared it, and called on the name of Baal from morning until noon. They said, "Baal, answer us!" But there wasn't a sound or an answer. So they danced around the altar they had made. (27) At noon Elijah started to make fun of them. "Shout louder, since he is a god. Maybe he's thinking, relieving himself, or traveling! Maybe he's sleeping, and you have to wake him!" (28) So they shouted louder. They also cut themselves with swords and spears until their blood flowed. (This is what their ritual called for.) (29) In the afternoon they continued to rant and rave until the time for the evening sacrifice. But there was no sound, no answer, no attention given to them. (30) Then Elijah said to all the people, "Come over here." So all the people came to him. He rebuilt the LORD  (יהוה)'S altar that had been torn down. (31) Elijah took 12 stones, one for each of the tribes named after Jacob's sons. (The LORD  (יהוה) had spoken his word to Jacob: "Your name will be Israel.") (32) Elijah built an altar in the LORD  (יהוה)'S name with those stones. He also made a trench that could hold 12 quarts of grain around the altar. (33) He arranged the wood, cut up the bull, and put it on the wood. (34) He said, "Fill four jars with water. Pour the water on the offering and on the wood." Then he said, "Do it again," and they did it again. Then he said, "Do it a third time," and they did it a third time. (35) The water flowed around the altar, and even the trench was filled with water. (36) When it was time to offer the sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward. He said, "LORD  (יהוה) God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, make known today that you are God in Israel and that I'm your servant and have done all these things by your instructions. (37) Answer me, LORD  (יהוה)! Answer me! Then these people will know that you, LORD  (יהוה), are God and that you are winning back their hearts." (38) So a fire from the LORD  (יהוה) fell down and consumed the burnt offering, wood, stones, and dirt. The fire even dried up the water that was in the trench. (39) All the people saw it and immediately bowed down to the ground. "The LORD  (יהוה) is God!" they said. "The LORD  (יהוה) is God!" (40) Elijah told them, "Seize the prophets of Baal. Don't let any of them escape." The people seized them, and Elijah took them to the Kishon River and slaughtered them there. (41) Then Elijah told Ahab, "Get up, eat, and drink. It sounds like a heavy rain is coming." (42) Ahab got up to eat and drink. Elijah went to the top of Carmel and bowed down on the ground to pray. (43) He said to his servant, "Please go back to Mount Carmel, and look toward the sea." He went up, looked, came back, and said, "There's nothing." Seven times Elijah told him, "Go back." (44) After the seventh time the servant said, "A little cloud like a man's hand is coming from the sea." Elijah said, "Go and tell Ahab, 'Prepare your chariot, and leave before the rain delays you.'" (45) Gradually, the sky grew darker with clouds and wind, and there was a heavy rain. Ahab got into his chariot to go back to Jezreel.

1 Kings 17:1-18:45 NWT . . .And E·li´jah the Tish´bite from the inhabitants of Gil´e·ad proceeded to say to A´hab: “As Jehovah  (יהוה) the God of Israel before whom I do stand is living, there will occur during these years neither dew nor rain, except at the order of my word!” 2 The word of Jehovah  (יהוה) now came to him, saying: 3 “Go away from here, and you must turn your way eastward and conceal yourself at the torrent valley of Che´rith that is east of the Jordan. 4 And it must occur that from the torrent valley you should drink, and the ravens I shall certainly command to supply you food there.” 5 Immediately he went and did according to the word of Jehovah  (יהוה), and so went and took up dwelling by the torrent valley of Che´rith that is east of the Jordan. 6 And the ravens themselves were bringing him bread and meat in the morning and bread and meat in the evening, and from the torrent valley he kept drinking. 7 But it came about at the end of some days that the torrent valley became dry, because there had occurred no downpour upon the earth. 8 The word of Jehovah  (יהוה) now came to him, saying: 9 “Rise up, go to Zar´e·phath, which belongs to Si´don, and you must dwell there. Look! I shall certainly command there a woman, a widow, to supply you food.” 10 Accordingly he rose up and went to Zar´e·phath and came into the entrance of the city; and, look! a woman, a widow, was there gathering up pieces of wood. So he called to her and said: “Please, get me a sip of water in a vessel that I may drink.” 11 When she began to go and get it, he went on to call to her and say: “Please, get me a bit of bread in your hand.” 12 At this she said: “As Jehovah  (יהוה) your God is living, I have no round cake, but a handful of flour in the large jar and a little oil in the small jar; and here I am gathering up a few pieces of wood, and I must go in and make something for myself and my son, and we shall have to eat it and die.” 13 Then E·li´jah said to her: “Do not be afraid. Go in, do according to your word. Only from what is there make me a small round cake first, and you must bring it out to me, and for yourself and your son you can make something afterward. 14 For this is what Jehovah  (יהוה) the God of Israel has said, ‘The large jar of flour itself will not get exhausted, and the small jar of oil itself will not fail until the day of Jehovah  (יהוה)’s giving a downpour upon the surface of the ground.’” 15 So she went and did according to E·li´jah’s word; and she continued to eat, she together with him and her household, for days. 16 The large jar of flour itself did not get exhausted, and the small jar of oil itself did not fail, according to Jehovah  (יהוה)’s word that he had spoken by means of E·li´jah. 17 And it came about after these things that the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, fell sick, and his sickness came to be so severe that there was no breath left in him. 18 At this she said to E·li´jah: “What do I have to do with you, O man of the [true] God? You have come to me to bring my error to mind and to put my son to death.” 19 But he said to her: “Give me your son.” Then he took him from her bosom and carried him up to the roof chamber, where he was dwelling, and laid him upon his own couch. 20 And he began calling to Jehovah  (יהוה) and saying: “O Jehovah  (יהוה) my God, is it also upon the widow with whom I am residing as an alien that you must bring injury by putting her son to death?” 21 And he proceeded to stretch himself upon the child three times and call to Jehovah  (יהוה) and say: “O Jehovah  (יהוה) my God, please, cause the soul of this child to come back within him.” 22 Finally Jehovah  (יהוה) listened to E·li´jah’s voice, so that the soul of the child came back within him and he came to life. 23 E·li´jah now took the child and brought him down from the roof chamber into the house and gave him to his mother; and E·li´jah then said: “See, your son is alive.” 24 Upon that the woman said to E·li´jah: “Now, indeed, I do know that you are a man of God and that Jehovah  (יהוה)’s word in your mouth is true.” 18 And it came about [after] many days that Jehovah  (יהוה)’s own word came to E·li´jah in the third year, saying: “Go, show yourself to A´hab, as I am determined to give rain upon the surface of the ground.” 2 Accordingly E·li´jah went to show himself to A´hab, while the famine was severe in Sa·mar´i·a. 3 Meantime, A´hab called O·ba·di´ah, who was over the household. (Now O·ba·di´ah himself had proved to be one greatly fearing Jehovah  (יהוה). 4 Hence it came about that when Jez´e·bel cut off Jehovah  (יהוה)’s prophets, O·ba·di´ah proceeded to take a hundred prophets and keep them hid by fifties in a cave, and he supplied them bread and water.) 5 And A´hab went on to say to O·ba·di´ah: “Go through the land to all the springs of water and to all the torrent valleys. Perhaps we may find green grass, that we may preserve the horses and mules alive and may not have [any more] of the beasts cut off.” 6 So they divided between themselves the land through which to pass. A´hab himself went alone by one way, and O·ba·di´ah himself went alone by another way. 7 As O·ba·di´ah continued on the way, why, there was E·li´jah to meet him. At once he recognized him and fell upon his face and said: “Is this you, my lord E·li´jah?” 8 At this he said to him: “It is I. Go, say to your lord, ‘Here is E·li´jah.’” 9 But he said: “What sin have I committed that you should be putting your servant into the hand of A´hab to put me to death? 10 As Jehovah  (יהוה) your God is living, there is not a nation or kingdom where my lord has not sent to look for you. After they had said, ‘He is not [here],’ he made the kingdom and the nation swear that they could not find you. 11 And now you are saying, ‘Go, say to your lord: “Here is E·li´jah.”’ 12 And it is bound to occur that, when I myself go from you, then the spirit of Jehovah  (יהוה) itself will carry you away to where I shall not know; and I shall have come to tell A´hab, and he will not find you, and he will be bound to kill me, as your servant himself has feared Jehovah  (יהוה) from his youth. 13 Has not my lord been told what I did when Jez´e·bel killed the prophets of Jehovah  (יהוה), how I kept some of the prophets of Jehovah  (יהוה) hid, a hundred men by fifties in a cave, and kept supplying them bread and water? 14 And now you are saying, ‘Go, say to your lord: “Here is E·li´jah.”’ And he will be bound to kill me.” 15 However, E·li´jah said: “As Jehovah  (יהוה) of armies before whom I do stand is living, today I shall show myself to him.” 16 Accordingly O·ba·di´ah went off to meet A´hab and told him; and so A´hab went to meet E·li´jah. 17 And it came about that, as soon as A´hab saw E·li´jah, A´hab immediately said to him: “Is this you, the bringer of ostracism upon Israel?” 18 To this he said: “I have not brought ostracism upon Israel, but you and the house of your father have, because YOU men have left the commandments of Jehovah  (יהוה), and you went following the Ba´als. 19 And now send, collect together all Israel to me at Mount Car´mel and also the four hundred and fifty prophets of Ba´al and the four hundred prophets of the sacred pole, who are eating at the table of Jez´e·bel.” 20 And A´hab proceeded to send among all the sons of Israel and collect the prophets together at Mount Car´mel. 21 Then E·li´jah approached all the people and said: “How long will YOU be limping upon two different opinions? If Jehovah  (יהוה) is the [true] God, go following him; but if Ba´al is, go following him.” And the people did not say a word in answer to him. 22 And E·li´jah went on to say to the people: “I myself have been left as a prophet of Jehovah  (יהוה), I alone, while the prophets of Ba´al are four hundred and fifty men. 23 Now let them give us two young bulls, and let them choose for themselves one young bull and cut it in pieces and put it upon the wood, but they should not put fire to it. And I myself shall dress the other young bull, and I must place it upon the wood, but I shall not put fire to it. 24 And YOU must call upon the name of YOUR god, and I, for my part, shall call upon the name of Jehovah  (יהוה); and it must occur that the [true] God that answers by fire is the [true] God.” To this all the people answered and said: “The thing is good.” 25 E·li´jah now said to the prophets of Ba´al: “Choose for yourselves one young bull and dress it first, because YOU are the majority; and call upon the name of YOUR god, but YOU must not put fire to it.” 26 Accordingly they took the young bull that he gave them. Then they dressed it, and they kept calling upon the name of Ba´al from morning till noon, saying: “O Ba´al, answer us!” But there was no voice, and there was no one answering. And they kept limping around the altar that they had made. 27 And it came about at noon that E·li´jah began to mock them and say: “Call at the top of YOUR voice, for he is a god; for he must be concerned with a matter, and he has excrement and has to go to the privy. Or maybe he is asleep and ought to wake up!” 28 And they began calling at the top of their voice and cutting themselves according to their custom with daggers and with lances, until they caused blood to flow out upon them. 29 And it came about that, as soon as noon was past and they continued behaving as prophets until the going up of the grain offering, there was no voice, and there was no one answering, and there was no paying of attention. 30 At length E·li´jah said to all the people: “Approach me.” So all the people approached him. Then he proceeded to mend the altar of Jehovah  (יהוה) that was torn down. 31 So E·li´jah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom Jehovah  (יהוה)’s word had come, saying: “Israel is what your name will become.” 32 And he went on to build the stones into an altar in the name of Jehovah  (יהוה) and to make a trench, of about the area sowed with two seah measures of seed, all around the altar. 33 After that he put the pieces of wood in order and cut the young bull in pieces and placed it upon the pieces of wood. He now said: “FILL four large jars with water and pour it upon the burnt offering and upon the pieces of wood.” 34 Then he said: “Do it again.” So they did it again. But he said: “Do it a third time.” So they did it a third time. 35 Thus the water went all around the altar, and the trench also he filled with water. 36 And it came about at the time that the grain offering goes up that E·li´jah the prophet began to approach and say: “O Jehovah  (יהוה), the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, today let it be known that you are God in Israel and I am your servant and it is by your word that I have done all these things. 37 Answer me, O Jehovah  (יהוה), answer me, that this people may know that you, Jehovah  (יהוה), are the [true] God and you yourself have turned their heart back.” 38 At that the fire of Jehovah  (יהוה) came falling and went eating up the burnt offering and the pieces of wood and the stones and the dust, and the water that was in the trench it licked up. 39 When all the people saw it, they immediately fell upon their faces and said: “Jehovah  (יהוה) is the [true] God! Jehovah  (יהוה) is the [true] God!” 40 Then E·li´jah said to them: “Seize the prophets of Ba´al! Do not let a single one of them escape!” At once they seized them, and E·li´jah then brought them down to the torrent valley of Ki´shon and slaughtered them there. 41 E·li´jah now said to A´hab: “Go up, eat and drink; for there is the sound of the turmoil of a downpour.” 42 And A´hab proceeded to go up to eat and drink. As for E·li´jah, he went up to the top of Car´mel and began crouching to the earth and keeping his face put between his knees. 43 Then he said to his attendant: “Go up, please. Look in the direction of the sea.” So he went up and looked and then said: “There is nothing at all.” And he went on to say, “Go back,” for seven times. 44 And it came about at the seventh time that he got to say: “Look! There is a small cloud like a man’s palm ascending out of the sea.” He now said: “Go up, say to A´hab, ‘Hitch up! And go down that the downpour may not detain you!’” 45 And it came about in the meantime that the heavens themselves darkened up with clouds and wind and a great downpour began to occur. And A´hab kept riding and made his way to Jez´re·el.

You will note the reference windows often include more than one translation of the Bible. The reason is to strive to gain the best possible understanding of the original Hebrew and Greek. Since we don't speak those languages, we rely on those who have come before and made the effort to translate those texts into English for us. Considering several translations gives the benefit of the understanding of several translation committees or individuals.
